Rude Mechs is an ensemble-based theatre collective from Austin, TX devising original, live performance for the new canon. Since 1995, Rude Mechs has devised a mercurial slate of original work, mixing up a performance cocktail of big ideas, cheap laughs, and thrifty spectacle. We are committed to creating our work collaboratively, no matter how much we fight.
Since 1995, Rude Mechs has created 21 original works and produced another handful of plays by other people. We tour our original work nationally and abroad whenever we can; maintain The Off Center, a performance venue in Austin for arts groups of every discipline; and run a year-round arts mentoring program for teenage girls.
We’re an ensemble-based theatre company with 6 Co-Producing Artistic Directors and a full company of 29 members. Our touring productions include "The Method Gun", “I’ve Never Been So Happy”, “Get Your War On”, “How Late It Was, How Late”, “Cherrywood”, and “Lipstick Traces”, as well as the show we’re currently building, “Now Now Oh Now.“
Rude Mechs has received over 200 local and national awards for our work. We are deeply grateful to get to tour our work to New York Live Arts. We’ve also toured around the States to venues like The Walker Arts Center, The Wexner Center, CTG in LA, and Woolly Mammoth in D.C.; and then out of the country to places like Austria’s SommerSzene, the Galway Arts Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (where we won the Total Theatre Award for Best New Play by an Ensemble), the Kiasma Festival (Helsinki) and the Brisbane Powerhouse Festival.
